Tygacil Linked To Increased Death Rate
Pfizer Limited has written to healthcare professionals advising that tigecycline (Tygacil) should only be used in situations where other drugs are not suitable. This warning comes because tigecycline has been linked to a higher death rate than similar medicines. Tigecycline is only approved for the treatment of complicated skin and soft tissue infections and complicated infections in the stomach. Patients who develop a second infection, particularly pneumonia, have shown to have a higher risk of death. The Summary of Product Characteristics (SPC) and Risk Management Plan for Tygacil has been updated to reflect this recommendation. UCB Pharma Limited has written to healthcare professionals to inform them of a temporary supply shortage of Keppra (levetiracetam) 100mg/mL oral solution 150mL with 1mL syringe in the UK.
